Signal Flow
Signal Flow for Stagehand Technicians
How does a microphone's sound reach the speakers, or how does a video play on the big screen at a concert? Signal Flow.
There are three main parts of signal flow:
Sources are the starting points. They generate the original signal, such as a singer using a microphone, a laptop playing a video, or a DVD player spinning a disc. They create the initial sound or image.
Processors: They take the signal from the source and tweak it. Imagine an audio mixer adjusting the volume of different microphones or a video switcher changing which camera feed is shown on screen. They refine and control the signal, ensuring everything sounds and looks its best.
Outputs: They transform the signal after processing into something that is visible or audible. Think of speakers blasting music, projectors displaying images, or video monitors. They deliver the final product to the audience. They're what the audience experiences.
So, how does the signal get from the source to the output? That's where signal flow comes in. Imagine the signal like water flowing through pipes. It always travels in one direction, from one device's output to the next's input. Just like water needs the right pipes to flow smoothly, signals need the right cables and connectors. The analogy with water flow is used in other areas to describe AV function (i.e., electricity).
Connectors are like adapters that connect different devices. They're designed for specific signals, so using the correct ones is essential. Trying to force a connector that doesn't fit could damage the equipment. If you're unsure which connector to use, always ask your supervisor for help. Always prioritize safety over regret! Knowing your connectors is a key skill for a stagehand.
As a stagehand, why is all of this important to you? Because any stage production requires adequate connectivity and signal flow. If the signals are not working properly, the show will not go as planned. It is similar to a band without any instruments; you will not hear any music! Your role in ensuring proper signal flow is critical to a successful performance.
Here are some key takeaways to remember:
Every piece of AV equipment is a source, a processor, or an output.
Signals flow in one direction, from output to input.
Using the right connectors is crucial for a working system.
Don't force connections—ask for help if you're not sure.
The first step to becoming an effective stagehand is to comprehend these fundamental ideas. AV system setup and troubleshooting will become second nature to you with practice and careful attention to detail. So, next time you work with an AV system, remember the principles of source, processing, output, and signal flow.
