Avoiding Audio Feedback in Live Events

Audio feedback, which produces a high-pitched noise, occurs when a microphone captures amplified sound from a speaker, resulting in a feedback loop. To avoid this issue, microphones should be positioned near the sound sources and away from the speakers. Loudspeakers should be placed in front of the performers, and the system gain should be suitably adjusted. Utilizing acoustic treatments can help diminish reflections. Performers need to practice proper microphone techniques and stay clear of the speakers.

“Ringing out” the system with an equalizer can help reduce troublesome frequencies. In-ear monitors eliminate the risk of feedback. Automatic feedback reducers can be helpful for more complex setups, but they should not replace proper setup techniques, planning, and placement.
